Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Can These New Weight-loss Meds Everyone is Talking About Help You?

Ozempic® and Mounjaro® have taken the weight-loss scene by storm. These drugs, initially developed for managing diabetes, have gained attention for their impressive weight-loss effects.

At Alevizos Medical, Dr. John Alevizos and a skilled team offer Ozempic and Mounjaro to qualified patients. If you’re wondering if they’re right for you, read on.

About Ozempic and Mounjaro

Ozempic is a brand name for semaglutide, a medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It mimics a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) that targets brain areas involved in appetite and food intake.

By enhancing the release of insulin and reducing the amount of glucagon, Ozempic helps lower blood sugar levels. Recent studies have shown that Ozempic can also lead to significant weight loss.

Mounjaro is a newer medication that combines two active ingredients: tirzepatide and glimepiride. Like Ozempic, it targets the GLP-1 receptor but also activates the GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) receptor. This dual action helps improve insulin secretion and sensitivity, leading to better blood sugar control and potential weight loss.

Research has indicated promising results for tirzepatide in aiding weight loss.

How these medications aid weight loss

Ozempic and Mounjaro help with weight loss in several ways. They reduce appetite by working on the brain’s appetite control centers, so you feel full sooner and stay full longer.

The medications also slow down the rate at which food leaves your stomach (gastric emptying), prolonging feelings of fullness and reducing overall food intake.

When taking Ozempic or Mounjaro, you also experience improved insulin sensitivity, which can help you manage blood sugar levels and reduce cravings and energy crashes that lead to overeating.

How to know if the medications are right for you

We thoroughly review your health history and weight-loss efforts before prescribing either Ozempic or Monjouro.

Both medications are primarily for people with type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes and struggle with weight loss, these drugs might be particularly beneficial. However, they can also help those without diabetes suffering from other obesity-related health issues.

We will inform you of all potential side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These effects often decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Rare but serious side effects can include pancreatitis and kidney problems.

We’ll also want you to understand that the medications alone are not a magic solution for weight loss. To achieve and maintain weight loss, we emphasize your need to adopt healthy lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

We help you create a comprehensive plan that includes these medications as part of a broader weight-loss strategy.
